23 Years of Durga: Satya star J.D. Chakravarthy on his directorial; "Maybe I should make Durga again"

What prompted you to direct Durga way back in 2002? Durga, well, you know, sometimes films don't work—not because they are bad, but because of the impact of your earlier films. The whole idea of making this film was because of Satya. When you ask me about Durga that is the first thing that comes to my mind. That’s exactly what happened with Durga—it came immediately after Satya. Did you enjoy turning director so early in your career? Well, the good thing was that it was a tremendous high. And the bad thing was also that it was a tremendous high. At that point in time, the South version worked well, so I decided to make it in Hindi. The moment I shared Durga's idea with Mahesh Bhatt Saab, he was very excited and wanted to produce the film. Mahesh Bhatt wanted to produce Durga? He wanted to be a partner with me in producing the film. But honestly, I don’t remember why that association never worked out. I seriously don't remember why it fizzled out. Do you think it was ahea...

The excitement for Sikandar is sky high and trade experts feel that a major reason for it is the presence of superstar Salman Khan. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “I genuinely hope that with Sikandar, Salman hits the ball out of the park. He has been a major contributor to the business in mass pockets over decades. That’s why he managed to build a strong following. Such following is rare; his films may or may not work and yet people say, ‘Yeh hamara bhai hai’! They are ready to fight for him.” Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, opined, “Some people have complained that trailer dekh ke mazaa nahin aaya. But we need to understand that brand Salman Khan wasn’t built on extraordinary cinema. Brand Salman Khan was built only on Sikandar kind of cinema. I played Samar, a man forced into an arranged marriage who refuses to speak to his wife. After Sara Akash, I became the mascot of the New Wave movement. The offers wouldn’t stop. I was spoiled for choice. Unfortunately, many of the films I signed after Sara Akash were either shelved or released sporadically. No one saw them.” Rakesh lamented that nearly ten of his films never saw the light of day. “One of them was ...

16 years of Barah Aana: Director Raja Krishna Menon wants the film to be re-released: “The film was a bit early for the Indian audience when it was released”

Raj Krishna Menon’s mellow, mirthful and, at times, moving story of three North Indian migrants, Barah Aana brings in a sense of un-visited surprise. There are three main characters: a quiet driver Shukla (Naseeruddin Shah), a watchman Yadav (Vijay Raaz) and a waiter Aman (Arjun Mathur), all driven to the doors of despair but stopped in time by a self-directed sense of humour that rescues them from self-destruction. Barah Aana completes 16 years today. On the film’s anniversary, Menon looks back at his debut. How do you look back at you debut film? Barah Aana was a true indie and that indie experience is irreplaceable. We had next to no money and so the film was really made by everyone coming together to tell a story we all passionately wanted to. Being a second generation person means people know I exist. I am on the radar and the database. This itself is something that is an uphill climb for outsiders because they hav...
