How Yash Johar’s generosity during Agneepath shoot came back to Karan Johar as a land offer in Goa: “He was giving HUGE parcel of land to me for FREE…sometimes I SLAP myself for declining the offer”

Komal Nahta had a wonderful conversation with Karan Johar about the production aspects, star fees, entourage and a lot more. At the beginning, Karan Johar opened up about the untimely demise of his father, Yash Johar, due to cancer in 2004.

He said, “Before passing away, my father wrote an 11-page letter to me. It was a technical letter and served as a guideline. It informed me about our investments, properties, etc. as he knew that main kuch nahin jaanta. Apoorva Mehta and I used to read that regularly; it was our bible. One of the pages mentioned that we do not owe anyone any money. The page also had a list of 12-14 people, who owed him money. He categorically wrote that ‘If they themselves call you or meet you, only then you accept the money. You will not call them (asking for the money)’. He mentioned the last part in capital letters (smiles).”

He revealed, “You would not believe, but his goodwill was such that out of those 12 or 14, nearly all of them called and everyone returned the money. In fact, a year after his demise, I was in Goa to attend IFFI where the organizers paid homage to my father. At the hotel lobby, I met a man who was trying to meet me. He told me that he owned a lot of land in Goa. He had met my father during the shoot of Agneepath (1990). He told me that my father set him up and gave him the first cheque of Rs. 1 lakh. He revealed that because of that investment, he was able to own a gazillion properties in Goa! He said, ‘Your father didn’t need to pay me. But he liked me and I helped him during the shoot. Still, he gave me Rs. 1 lakh and that helped me start my business’. He then said that in return, he wanted to gift me a piece of land!”

Karan Johar continued, “I called Apoorva. He told me, ‘De raha hai toh le lo’ (laughs)! I took time to think. I met him again and told him, ‘It is very kind of you to offer. But I don’t know what faith my father gave you’. Also, that Goan man was not in my letter (smiles). Hence, I declined to take the land. My father didn’t give him the money as a loan; he gave it out of love. Hence, I would not have felt good taking the land. It would have been letting down my father.”

KJo added, “He assured me that the paperwork was all clear and it was a huge parcel of land for free, but I declined. Sometimes, I slap myself (for refusing the offer), but chalo theek hai! You never regret a heartfelt decision.”
