EXCLUSIVE: Firoz A. Nadiadwallah reacts to Paresh Rawal’s comments on Phir Hera Pheri: “I respect his views. Unka ek artistic tarika hai dekhne ka…”

One of the greatest films of Indian Cinema, Hera Pheri (2000), will complete 25 years on March 31. The film has achieved cult status and its sequel, Phir Hera Pheri (2006) has gone miles ahead when it comes to memes. This film also has a separate fan base and hence, many were surprised by Paresh Rawal’s comments on the sequel. Paresh, who features in this series as the legendary Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, said, “Everybody was overconfident about the film. It lost its innocence. Sorry to say, but woh film nahi bani thi barabar. I would tell Neeraj (director Neeraj Vora), ‘Tu bhar raha hai ismein, woh zarori nahi hai yaar’.”

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Firoz A. Nadiadwallah on the 25th anniversary of Hera Pheri. When asked about Paresh Rawal’s comments, he replied, “I respect his views. Unka ek artistic tarika hai dekhne ka. He talked about the betterment of the film. He felt that the film could have been even better.”

He also praised Paresh Rawal’s flawless performance in both Hera Pheri and Phir Hera Pheri, “Paresh ji maintained the typical dialect. He took the time and effort in re-dubbing the whole film, keeping the pilot track in mind.”

Firoz A. Nadiadwallah also remarked, “Hera Pheri is not a comedy. It has wit and humour, which is different from comedy. There’s no buffoonery, slapstick, no double-meaning dialogues, no profanity, no vulgarity etc. It’s a clean product, like a Disney film.”

As for Phir Hera Pheri, he commented, “This was also the first film to have a genuine sequel with the same characters. Those were the days when nobody had heard of a sequel! We faced a lot of resistance from many people, including those in the film fraternity. We were told, ‘Hera Pheri is a nice film. Iska sequel banao hi mat’. But we went ahead.”

Phir Hera Pheri is remembered not just for its funny moments but also hit songs. Talking of the end-credit song, he revealed, “‘Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen’ was shot in 3 hours in Filmistan Studio. Usually, it takes a minimum of 2 days to shoot a song. But here, we managed to do it in 3 hours. It was also inexpensive to shoot it. In the background, we mentioned ‘Dhoom Dhadaka Orchestra’. That’s it!”

Firoz A. Nadiadwallah signed off by paying tribute to Hera Pheri’s writer and Phir Hera Pheri’s writer-director Neeraj Vora, “We miss Neeraj ji. His blessings and love are there with us. We are also eternally grateful to Paresh ji and Akshay ji. Without them, we could have not made Hera Pheri.”
