Kangana Ranaut announces Emergency to stream on Netflix on March 17

Actor Kangana Ranaut has announced the OTT release of her film Emergency. On Friday, she shared the news briefly with her fans on Instagram Stories.

Kangana Ranaut re-shared a fan post on social media featuring collages of her and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Alongside it, she simply wrote, “17th March releasing on @netflix.” Emergency, which premiered in theaters on January 17, will be available on Netflix from March 17.

In Emergency, Kangana Ranaut played former Indian Prime Minister, depicting the historic Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. Besides starring in the film, she also directed it. The cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik.

Emergency faced multiple delays, censor issues, and protests from Sikh bodies over alleged misrepresentation of facts. In August last year, the SGPC sent a legal notice to the producers, claiming the film misrepresented Sikh history and characters. They demanded the removal of objectionable scenes portraying "anti-Sikh" sentiments.

EMERGENCY portrays the life and times of Indira Gandhi in an unbiased manner, elevated by stellar performances from Kangana Ranaut and Vishak Nair. At the box office, while the controversy surrounding the film and the Cinema Lovers Day offer may provide some support, it remains to be seen whether audiences will be drawn to a story set in a historical period nearly five decades old.
