Varun Dhawan ADMITS being “insecure” of Student Of The Year co-star Sidharth Malhotra: “He was tall and wide, good looking”
Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan recently revealed that he felt insecure about his co-star Sidharth Malhotra during the making of their debut film, Student Of The Year (SOTY), in 2012. Directed by Karan Johar, the film marked the Bollywood debut of Varun, Sidharth, and Alia Bhatt, becoming a launchpad for all three actors.
Varun’s Struggles During SOTY In a candid conversation with YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra, Varun Dhawan spoke about the challenges he faced while shooting for SOTY. The actor admitted that his father, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, had noticed his struggles. Reflecting on his insecurities, Varun said, “He (Sidharth) was tall and wide, good looking, and there were two heroes in the film. At that time, I felt that he is amazing and looks handsome, so people will only watch him. Will people even notice me or not? What if my dream only stays a dream?” The Shadow of Nepotism Adding to his concerns was the growing debate around nepotism in Bollywood. Varun acknowledged the negativity surrounding his debut. “Moreover, the negativity around nepotism also started at that time. So during that time, I hadn’t planned anything before I entered the industry. I only knew that I’ve worked hard and I am deserving, but people were saying something else,” he shared.
Varun further explained that proving his talent was an uphill battle. “The reception has not always been flowery, that’s what people feel. But I have had to fight that a lot. No matter what happens, I will keep fighting,” he added. Overcoming Insecurity Despite these challenges, Varun managed to carve a niche in Bollywood. He credited his work and performances for changing public perception. “However, I had to fight it hard at that time through my performance and work. When my films started working, then that perception broke. Papa ne bhi baad mai kaam diya, par main jitna bhi bol loon, logon ko vahi lagega,” he admitted. Varun’s Latest Project On the professional front, Varun Dhawan’s latest release, Baby John, directed by Kalees, hit theatres recently. Co-starring Keerthy Suresh, Jackie Shroff, and Wamiqa Gabbi, the action-drama is an adaptation of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil hit Theri. However, the film has received mixed reviews from critics.
