Nikkhil Advani reveals Shah Rukh Khan didn’t like his iconic helicopter scene in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham; says: “The scene was more about Jaya Bachchan”

The scene of Shah Rukh Khan's Rahul Raichand exiting the helicopter and rushing toward the mansion, where Jaya Bachchan awaits him with a thaali, is iconic. This moment from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is memorable for many Indian moviegoers and is frequently mentioned as Shah Rukh's best entry in a film. However, the only drawback is that Shah Rukh himself felt disappointed by it.

In a recent conversation, filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, who served as an assistant director on the film, shared that Shah Rukh Khan felt underwhelmed by the scene. On Cyrus Broacha's podcast Cyrus Says, Advani explained that while Shah Rukh was excited about the scene when he first heard about it, he was ultimately disappointed with the final result. He said, “When we told him that his entry in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is with the helicopter. He thought he is going to jump off the helicopter, while he just had to step down. The scene was more about Jaya Bachchan that she gets to know about the arrival of her son as soon as he touches the ground.”

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, directed by Karan Johar, was the most expensive Indian film at its time of release. Premiering in 2001, it shattered multiple box office records, earning over ₹100 crore globally. In addition to Shah Rukh Khan, the film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor.

On the work front, Shah Rukh made three back to back successful films, Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki. All three became box office hits, with the first two surpassing ₹1000 crore in earnings. However, he has not had any releases in 2024. He is expected to return to the big screen with Sujoy Ghosh's King in 2025, which will mark his first collaboration with his daughter, Suhana Khan, who stars alongside him in the film.
