Kritika Kamra on Bollywood debut getting shelved after bagging Dharma Productions’ project: “It was kind of disappointing”

Kritika Kamra has revealed a surprising turn in her career trajectory. In a conversation with News18 Showsha, she shared that her Bollywood debut was initially slated to be a Karan Johar-Ekta Kapoor production. The actress was set to star in a Hindi adaptation of Mira Nair's Vanity Fair, opposite Emraan Hashmi. Directed by Akshay Roy, the project was in the advanced stages of pre-production when it was abruptly shelved due to financial reasons.

Despite the disappointment of losing a potential Dharma launch, Kritika maintains a positive outlook, believing that the experience has shaped her into a more prepared actor. “If that film would have happened, it would have been my debut. It was the first film that I had signed. It was supposed to be directed by Akshay Roy. We did the prep and the readings. The schedules were all charted. But then the film didn’t happen because of some financial and business reasons,” she revealed.

She added, “That was the time when I had quit television and was auditioning for films. To get a Dharma launch was and is a pretty big deal. It was signed and sealed and was ready to go on floors. And when that didn’t happen, it was kind of disappointing. But looking back, I think I’m happy with the way things turned out.”

Interestingly, fate intervened as Kritika eventually collaborated with Dharma Productions for the web series Gyaarah Gyaarah. However, securing the role of a cop in the series wasn't without its challenges. The actress had to audition for the part, a process she wholeheartedly supports. She believes that auditions provide a level playing field for actors and offer a chance to showcase their versatility.

Gyaarah Gyaarah is an Indian adaptation of the 2016 Korean drama Signal. The series is a co-production of Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, which will arrive on Zee5 on August 6, 2024.
