EXCLUSIVE: Chandan Roy Sanyal on Lootere being affected by Ukraine-Russia war and COVID-19, “After many hurdles, show has finally released”
Disney+ Hotstar’s latest show Lootere has released on Friday March 22 on the streaming platform. It mainly stars Rajit Kapur and Vivek Gomber. The show tells the story of a ship being hijacked by pirates in Somalia. Chandan Roy Sanyal, who also plays a pivotal role in the show, told Bollywood Hungama exclusively that, just like the characters in the show, their team also had to face some major hurdles before being able to release it.
He said, “It was in shoot from 2020. There was the pandemic. Later, my portion was supposed to be shot in Ukraine, but a war erupted over there. The show takes place between Somalia and Ukraine. So, after so many hurdles, the show has finally released. I would like to congratulate everybody associated with it. It’s a very fresh perspective to Indian web scene. It’s a well-shot stylish show. It looks like an international production.”
Chandan plays the owner of the ship. Sharing more about the show and his character, he said, “It’s about pirates who come and capture the ship. I play this guy called Ajay Kotwal, who is the owner of the ship. It’s about how he tries to get it back from the pirates. He is from Ukraine, who runs this huge shipping company. He is sitting worried in Ukraine and tries to control the situation.”
He added, “His father is the owner of this big company Kotwal Industries. Ajay Kotwal is his spoilt son. It’s a like a funny part. His father hates him. So now his aim is how to tell his father that the ship has been hijacked and how to get it freed from the pirates.”
Surprisingly, Chandan isn’t seen in the teaser and trailer of the show. When asked the reason behind this, he said, “The main reason is that the actual story is taking place in Somalia. My story is taking place in Ukraine. And his character is not a very big part of this season.”
Lootere is directed by Jai Mehta, who is the son of the acclaimed filmmaker Hansal Mehta. “Jai is very bright, and he has a very bright future,” said Chandan. “He is an excellent director to work with. He works very closely with the actors. He gives them freedom. He doesn’t control them much. If I come up with an idea for improvisation, he would let me do that. I feel Jai has a great future and he has pulled of something so difficult.”
Hansal Mehta is the showrunner of Lootere. Speaking about his contribution, Chandan added, “As a showrunner, his contribution was to get the script ready, which Suparn Verma has written. He also did the casting, direction, etc. He is like our pyramid. When you see the show, you will realize that there is a full Hansal Mehta touch to it in the storytelling.”
Interestingly, Chandan has two projects lined up in two weeks and that too with the same platform. Just a week later on March 29, his movie Patna Shukla with Raveena Tandon will start streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
