Saiyami Kher on preparing for Ghoomer, “Yuvraj Singh’s story inspired me”

That Saiyami Kher is a cricket enthusiast is not news anymore. Interestingly, she would be playing the role of a cricketer in her upcoming movie Ghoomer, which is directed by R Balki. However, her character of a cricketer is the one who tragically loses her right arm, with which she used to bowl. She then comes across a coach, played by Abhishek Bachchan, who inspires her to continue playing cricket despite her condition.

One needs mental preparation to play such roles as much as physical. It was India’s former star cricketer Yuvraj Singh who inspired Saiyami in this regard. Yuvraj went through the ordeal of being diagnosed with cancer. He revealed the news right after the 2011 World Cup, where he was adjudged the Man of the Series. He then got cured and returned to the game.

Speaking about how Yuvraj has been inspirational for her, Saiyami said in a statement, “For me Ghoomer is a film about triumph. And Yuvi’s career has been an inspiring triumph. A sports person does not just prepare physically but also mentally. I feel Yuvraj’s story has been a story that has inspired me, and many like me. To be at the peak of his career and then go through cancer and come back from there speaks volumes about his mental tenacity. Yuvi has known my love for cricket. I can’t wait for him to see it.”

Ghoomer is inspired by the story of Karoly Takacs, the late Hungarian right-hand shooter who won two Olympic gold medals with his left hand after his other hand was seriously injured.

Written by R Balki, Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani, Ghoomer also stars Shabana Azmi, Angad Bedi and Amitabh Bachchan. The movie is all set to release in theatres on August 18.
