Varun Dhawan says Janhvi Kapoor took it personally when he didn’t speak to her for 20 days during Bawaal shoot: “I did it selfishly but I think it helped both of us at that time”

Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor are coming together for the first time in a movie. Prime Video launched the trailer of Bawaal on Sunday in Dubai. The cast, director Nitesh Tiwari and film creators were in attendance for the grand launch. Varun said that he initially didn’t speak to Janhvi so that they could create a “getting to know each other” phase on screen more authentically. However, he said that Janhvi had no idea of his process and took it personally when he didn’t speak to her for 20 days.

In an interview with Gallata Plus, Varun said, “Initially, at least for the first month we went on set, I tried this thing where I said I won’t communicate with her much. Because I felt we’ll become friends like this (snaps). I said let me not and let me be a little aloof, a little cold. I’ll talk to everyone else but her, and purposely. I felt it might evoke something in her and something in me when we were doing scenes of that nature.”

He added, “Sir (Nitesh Tiwari) was on this. And then eventually, I told her after 20 days. Then she realised it, otherwise she took it personally. See, I did it selfishly but I think it helped both of us at that time. Actually, in the film, how gradually the couple got to know each other, we also got to know each other gradually, which was interesting.”

Reacting to this, Nitesh Tiwari said, “I didn’t really notice. I honestly don’t mind which schools you guys are from, as long as I get my shot. I think I got that.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, and starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, Bawaal is a timeless love story by Sajid Nadiadwala’s production banner Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment in collaboration with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari’s Earthsky Pictures. The film will premiere on Prime Video India on July 21.
