Matt Reeves confirms Robert Pattinson starrer The Batman will not include Bruce Wayne's origin story - "I knew we couldn’t do that"

Speaking to Esquire magazine, filmmaker Matt Reeves confirmed that his upcoming film The Batman will not include the iconic origin story for the caped-crusader. “Sure, you could reboot Batman — it’s been done dozens of times since he first appeared in Detective Comics in 1939, almost certainly more. But would anyone have the stomach for yet another retelling of his origin story, from a slightly different angle?” he said.

“We’ve seen it so many times. It’s been done too much. I knew we couldn’t do that,” Matt Reeves added.

Matt Reeves also shared that during the writing process, he was very intrigued by the other versions of Batman in other comics and stories like the one in Batman: Year One, a comic book series written by Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli, where the young Bruce Wayne figures out on how to be the vigilante hero, giving it a detective-noir style and gritty, crime-filled streets of Gotham.

Prior to this version, Tim Burton's Batman, Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever, Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and even Todd Phillips' Joker, all of them included the origin of Batman.

Matt Reeves told Esquire that he feels he has made the best possible version of this story, combining well-known elements with ones that have yet to be connected to the character, stating that “I’m very proud of it. I felt it was the best version of the story that we could possibly do to justify having another Batman. You always have to have a reason, and from the beginning that was the mission for me.”

Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
