Prerna Arora on Manoj Kumar: “Listening to him was like reliving the Golden Era”

Producer Prerna Arora has the fondest memories of her interaction with veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar. “As a huge fan, it was my sincere wish to remake one of his most popular films, Woh Kaun Thi. I was told he wouldn’t like the idea, as he didn’t believe in remakes. But I was adamant. When I contacted him, he was so warm, welcoming, encouraging—and so knowledgeable. He was an encyclopedia on Indian cinema. Just listening to him was like reliving the golden era of our cinema,” says Prerna, visibly moved. The remake of Woh Kaun Thi, which originally starred Manoj Kumar, was to feature Shahid Kapoor in the lead role. “Sadly, the project never took off. But I got the chance to interact with one of the most brilliant minds in the film industry. As an actor, Manoj Sir was the handsomest, the most adorable. I can watch him endlessly in Woh Kaun Thi, Gumnaam, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Dus Numbri, and Purab Aur Paschim. He and Dharam Paji are, in my eyes, the handsomest actors in India. As a...

Akshay Kumar and Tabu will begin shooting the climax of their horror comedy Bhooth Bangla in a southern city on April 17. Sources reveal that director Priyadarshan has planned a month-long schedule focused primarily on the film's climax and other key scenes. Once the schedule wraps up by mid-May, Bhooth Bangla will be almost complete. That’s swift progress for the horror comedy, which began filming only this January in Rajasthan. The shoot kicked off at Chomu Palace in Jaipur, with the cast—including Kumar, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Mithila Palkar—later filming in Hyderabad and Mumbai. Now, director Priyadarshan is set to begin the film’s most crucial phase. A source shared, “A grand palace set has been created by art director Sabu Cyril at Ramoji Studios for this segment. The main cast will be involved in a sequence where Kumar’s character, a magician, debunks myths surrounding black magic. While it deals with a serious theme, the scene will be delivered in an entert...

8 Years of Naam Shabana: Director Shivam hints at sequel; says, “I’ve asked Neeraj about a sequel or spin-off”

In Naam Shabana, much of the gripping narrative unfolds on crowded streets. Director Shivam Nair crafts scenes with an urgent, anguished energy, making us immediately sense the protagonist’s need to avenge both past and present wrongs. Taapsee Pannu plays this introverted yet determined character with a compelling mix of restraint and transparency. It is a remarkable performance, but then, this is a remarkable film. The two halves of the narrative almost feel like separate movies—equally compelling but constructed under different circumstances. The first half focuses on the heroine’s budding relationship with a persistent admirer (played by Taher Mithaiwala), only to shatter her hopes for love. The second half shifts gears into a gripping spy thriller, with Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran delivering a menacing turn as an international villain. This is where the action sequences explode onto the screen with full force. Reflecting on the experience, director Shivam Nair says, “It w...

Sunny Deol on mistakes and apologies, "Mistakes happen; saying sorry is important"

Sunny Deol, who is making a comeback in the upcoming action thriller Jaat, directed by Gopichand Malineni, recently appeared on a podcast with Komal Nahta. Speaking about his film, which features the catchphrase ‘Sorry Bol’ in the trailer, Sunny revealed whether the phrase resonates with him in real life or contradicts his personality. When asked whether he prefers people apologising to him or openly admitting his own mistakes, Sunny shared his perspective on the significance of apologising. “Sorry is an emotion; it means realizing you’ve made a mistake and accepting it,” he explained. He admitted that he is self-aware when he makes mistakes. “Whenever I make a mistake, I realize it,” he said. The conversation took a playful turn when the interviewer jokingly asked whether he ever makes mistakes at all. Sunny lightheartedly acknowledged that errors are a natural part of life. “Mistakes happen; that’s how we learn. But realizing them and saying, ‘I’m sorry,’ is very important,” he emp...

14 years of Game: Director Abhinay Deo on the film's box office failure, "I love what we made but for some reason it didn't catch the audiences' fancy"

Filmmaker Abhinay Deo’s Game completed 14 years yesterday. Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher, Sikandar Kher and Sarah Jan Dias, the movie was a thriller with a lot of twists and turns. On the film’s 14th anniversary, Deo looks back at it in an interview with us. How do you look back on this intriguing thriller? Game has always been a special film for me. It was the second film I shot but it released first. Game was a disaster at box office, while the exactly three months later released Delhi Belly, my actual first film, which ended up being one of the most successful films of that year. So, would you have preferred Delhi Belly to be your first release? It was an amazing experience and a humbling one to taste bitter failure and sweet success for a debutant in a span of three months. However, Game taught me more than Delhi Belly did, as failure always is a better teacher than success is. Game was a watchable thriller. Why do you think it didn’t work? I t...
